Gabriel's mother resisted their love, so she paid robbers to throw the girl into a pit. Gabriel then disappeared with his horse, and shortly afterwards near the exit from another pit nearby, they found only a horse, but there was no trace to Gabriel. According to legend, every day the petrified body of a shepherdess slides deeper and deeper towards the bottom of the pit so it could meet her beloved on the other side.
Istria is fabulous not only for its various interesting localities but also for its numerous medieval small towns and fortifications testifying to the rich history of this region. For example, the town of Motovun in the very centre of Istria is a source of medieval fortresses. Each summer Motovun also becomes a place of a famous film festival.
On the Istrian coast, there are various urban centres such as Umag, Poreč, Rovinj or Pula, with a history dating back to pre-ancient times. For example, in the south of the Istrian peninsula, in a town named Pula, you will be able to see the Roman amphitheatre, also known as one of the largest ancient, preserved monuments. A little further on the north, in the town of Poreč, you can see a unique complex of early Christian sacral architecture from the 6th century which is one of the most beautifully preserved monuments of Byzantine art in this area.
Istria is also a region with a rich eno-gastronomic offer, given its very favourable geographical position. Today the best wines and olive oil are produced in Istria. Do not miss to try other interesting recipes such as Istrian Boškarin meat, intense truffles or traditionally made pasta.
If you want your holiday to turn into a real oasis of peace and privacy, choose Villa Itea which will provide the luxury you deserve. On the other hand, the rich gastronomic, cultural and sports offer of Istria will complete your holiday and make it perfect.
